Managing Dental Drama

Generosity on Display

Consultant and Dentist Duo; Practice Problems Season 4 Episode 12

In this episode, Bethany shares multiple heartwarming accounts of doctors who chose random and sweet acts of generosity. On this Thanksgiving week, she hopes that the accounts of others and their acts of appreciation will impact listeners to stretch themselves on the topic of generosity. In addition, reflecting on how others display generosity is only going to inspire new and courageous acts of generosity.

0:01
to our lovely managing Dental drama
0:05
teammates team members we have uh
0:09
something in store for y'all that y'all
0:10
have been asking for and to me docs this
0:14
is something that you could gift your
0:16
team members I'll quit talking Bethany
0:18
roll it out oh my goodness I'm so
0:20
excited about this because the one
0:22
pervasive question that I get on a
0:25
weekly basis is somebody telling me
0:28
about an uncomfortable conversation that
0:30
they had with the patient regarding
0:32
insurance and how they could not
0:34
deescalate the conversation I get asked
0:37
this weekly so doctors if you didn't
0:40
know that your teams are struggling
0:41
through these conversations they are so
0:44
this bonus episode is actually detailing
0:46
out specific strategies for handling
0:49
those very uncomfortable conversations
0:51
which you're right as a doc I mean I'm
0:53
sure it's happening some but I don't go
0:56
up there I don't want to go up there and
0:57
I don't want to know about it so I bury
0:59
my head in the sand
1:00
and my poor team has to fend for
1:03
themselves and so I'm super excited to
1:05
have some tools for them so wait tell me
1:07
again how do I get this so you've got to
1:09
be a subscriber and December we are
1:12
dropping this bonus episode so you need
1:15
to subscribe by December 2nd so you can
1:18
have access to this content
1:21

1:32

1:35
we dive into the solutions we've created
1:38
and the mistakes we've made while
1:40
managing Dental
1:42
drama let's get started Happy
1:45
Thanksgiving week everybody thanks for
1:47
joining me today we've had such great
1:50
content this month on the whole aspect
1:54
of generosity and
1:56
appreciation I wanted to wrap up the
2:01
month especially this week with it being
2:03
Thanksgiving week with some really sweet
2:06
examples of generosity one of the
2:09
questions that Dr Kuba will often ask me
2:12
after I've had a guest on like Dr
2:14
Williamson last week is she'll ask me
2:17
for more examples can you provide more
2:19
examples of what he said when he meant
2:23
XYZ and so I thought it would be a
2:25
really good summary today to f focus on
2:30
some acts of generosity that I have
2:32
personally witnessed over these 15 years
2:35
of Consulting that I think are really
2:38
special and some of them are big and
2:41
bold and some of them are just sweet and
2:44
simple but it comes each of these come
2:48
out of a heart of
2:49
appreciation and that appreciation LED
2:53
my clients in these moments to make
2:55
choices to be generous and so I think I
2:59
think it's a good encouragement for us
3:03
to listen to examples of the ways that
3:06
somebody else has been generous and to
3:08
allow the messaging of that to really
3:11
hit us right there in the heart and
3:14
we're asking ourselves would we do that
3:17
um we may even let logic take over and
3:19
go oh my gosh I would never do that
3:21
because of XYZ somebody might take
3:24
advantage of it somebody might ask me
3:27
for more and we can think of a lot of
3:29
reasons to not be generous but I hope
3:32
you'll take the examples that I give
3:34
today and you'll use it as an
3:36
opportunity to consider where you might
3:39
be generous in your life and with your
3:42
team in particular so I wanted to
3:46
start with what I view as a real
3:49
practical one but it struck me as
3:52
extremely generous in the moment so I've
3:55
got a client that has two
3:57
rdas and there was a per period of time
4:01
where one RDA left the practice and it
4:05
was just down to the one
4:08
RDA and so that RDA certainly had her
4:11
hands full she was managing a entire
4:16
column of treatment plus the side column
4:19
that the other assistant used to manage
4:22
and so she was putting in a lot of extra
4:24
work the day was much more stressful and
4:28
my client chose a very generous act in
4:32
this moment now I think anybody that
4:35
works any type of job but especially an
4:37
hourly job knows that there's going to
4:39
be times that are busier and more hectic
4:42
and there's going to be times that are
4:43
slower and less hectic and that's just
4:46
par for the course but what my client
4:49
did is she said you know what I see you
4:52
and I know that you're working more than
4:54
you would have to work if there was a
4:55
counterpart so until I get a second RDA
4:59
hred I'm going to pay you $100 extra a
5:04
day for any day that you work alone and
5:07
that's just my way of showing
5:09
appreciation to you I don't want you to
5:11
be bitter or upset that you're having to
5:14
work so much harder and I want you to
5:17
also know that I appreciate you for all
5:19
the extra effort that you're putting in
5:22
so this to me was an extremely generous
5:25
act because number one it came out of a
5:28
heart of appreciation
5:30
number two it took a situation that
5:33
could turn somebody sour that RDA that
5:37
was left to fin for herself over time as
5:40
this dock is looking for a replacement
5:43
that assistant can start to grow weary
5:45
and bitter and tired about how hard
5:48
she's having to work but my client
5:51
prevented that from happening by making
5:54
sure that this RDA knew that she was
5:56
seen and appreciated and that my CL was
5:59
willing to put money into that many
6:02
practice owners might be willing to just
6:04
go oh good well I know it's going to be
6:06
hard but at least I might have a month
6:08
or two of reduced
6:10
overhead but my client didn't think of
6:12
it that way she said let's take what I
6:14
would have paid that other person and
6:16
let's give it to this RDA so I think
6:18
it's such a bold and awesome Act of
6:21
generosity the second example I wanted
6:24
to tell you about was one that you might
6:27
think of when you hear of the word
6:30
generosity I had a client that had a
6:33
very valuable team member that had been
6:35
extremely loyal to his practice over the
6:38
years and was quite phenomenal in her
6:42
position she did a fantastic job and he
6:46
knew that she was having some Financial
6:49
hardships her husband had been in and
6:51
out of work and he knew that times were
6:54
hard for them and so he was very
6:57
concerned when he heard that her car
7:00
broke down and that she was really
7:03
struggling to scr up the money to fix
7:07
the car so he decided
7:10
to put his own money towards those
7:13
repairs it was not cheap it was not an
7:17
inexpensive fix to her car but he knew
7:21
that number one he appreciated her he
7:24
knew she had a substantial impact on the
7:26
practice he knew that she was a hard
7:28
worker and and really was just up
7:31
against hard times and he took the
7:34
opportunity to really bless her with a
7:37
financial gift that allowed her to get
7:39
her car
7:41
repaired again this is the one that
7:44
people think about they're like oh but
7:46
then they're going to get keep coming
7:47
back for more then they're going to ask
7:50
you to do this for them and do that for
7:52
them we'll cross that bridge when we
7:53
come to it for this particular client of
7:56
mine and his employee she did not ask
7:58
for anything for further there was a
8:00
long history there and she was just very
8:03
appreciative of his help the third
8:06
example is in the state of Texas we
8:10
don't have any kind of state sponsored
8:11
maternity leave and so often times women
8:17
who work in Dental practices they're
8:18
usually taking a quick 6 to 8 week
8:21
maternity leave if that and then they're
8:24
back to work in many situations and so I
8:27
had one client that had had a employee
8:32
who very surprisingly got pregnant um
8:36
she and her husband weren't quite
8:37
prepared yet but they were excited about
8:40
the baby and he knew that there was
8:45
going to be financial hardship if she
8:47
lost all of her pay she didn't have a
8:50
lot of PTO stored up and so he knew that
8:54
she was going to go several weeks if not
8:57
a couple of months without pay so he and
9:00
I dialogued back and forth and I'll be
9:03
honest my non- generous self really
9:06
tried to persuade him not to take the
9:09
actions that he ultimately took but he
9:12
ended up continuing to pay her
9:15
throughout the maternity leave which did
9:18
end up being about 8 or n weeks long
9:22
that he paid her for those couple of
9:24
months and that was without any strings
9:28
attached so so it wasn't an attempt to
9:30
get her to come back it wasn't anything
9:33
other than him purely caring about this
9:36
employee and not wanting her and her
9:39
husband to be upon a financial hardship
9:42
because she stopped getting paid so he
9:45
paid the maternity leave even though
9:47
that was not a part of his policy or
9:49
anything that he had done before and to
9:52
me again it's an act of
9:56
generosity now this might sound like an
9:58
odd one
9:59
but I find that many of my clients when
10:05
they are terminating an employee for
10:08
whatever reason that you know that may
10:10
be ultimately they're they're fired
10:14
they're moving
10:15
on go forth go forth and Conquer
10:18
somewhere else not in this office and I
10:20
find it to be an act of generosity and
10:22
I've had many clients choose to do this
10:25
they recognize that if they fire a team
10:28
member and then that team member turns
10:30
around and is going for at least two
10:33
three four weeks without pay that that
10:36
can be an undue burden on that team
10:39
member so I've had so many of my clients
10:43
that are willing to do a severance pay
10:47
so they terminate the employee from her
10:50
position and then they let the employee
10:53
know I am going to pay you for an
10:55
additional two weeks or whatever the
10:57
case may be this will allow you to get
11:01
your foot in the door get resumés out
11:03
and hopefully you can secure a job
11:05
quickly and you won't miss a beat when
11:07
it comes to pay now again in a moment
11:10
where an employer is terminating a
11:14
employee that is a very odd time to
11:17
extend
11:18
generosity but I think it is such a
11:21
powerful moment for somebody who's
11:23
having a freak out oh my gosh I'm being
11:27
fired and immediately they're mind is
11:29
going to go to how can I pay the bills
11:31
how I'm going to get food on the table
11:33
what am I going to do and for that to be
11:36
met with by the way you don't have to
11:38
worry about pay for the next two weeks
11:40
you go you start applying you take your
11:43
time I I'm going to pay you for 2 weeks
11:46
and that's such a relief in that moment
11:48
and to me that is an act of generosity
11:51
that is unnecessary but very nice to
11:53
have for that employee in the
11:57
moment I've got another client
12:00
that she and her team had had a busy
12:05
busy busy couple of months it was
12:07
intense it was go go go there was just
12:12
not a moment to rest and so she
12:15
recognized how hard her team was
12:18
working and after a couple of months of
12:21
just really banging it out with
12:23
dentistry and and all the things related
12:26
to running a successful business she
12:28
wanted to do something that was special
12:31
and was a surprise for them but also
12:34
knowing that they were so tired from the
12:37
last couple months she also did not want
12:39
to do something that took a lot of time
12:41
away from them and their families and so
12:45
one afternoon she told them to keep
12:48
their schedule open she just took them
12:51
all took them down to the shoe shop and
12:54
allow them all to pick out a brand new
12:56
pair of tennis shoes and then sent them
12:59
on their way to go home so it was brief
13:02
it wasn't a drug out team building event
13:05
she recognized in the moment that her
13:07
team was tired but she wanted to do
13:09
something special for them and that was
13:12
what she did and it was certainly seen
13:14
as an act of
13:15
[Music]
13:17
generosity I also had a client who again
13:22
had some phenominal team members and he
13:24
knew that one single mom on his team
13:29
was had been working diligently to try
13:32
to make enough money to pay for her
13:36
fifth grade son to go to an away camp
13:40
with his fifth grade school so
13:43
apparently they did a fifth grade away
13:44
camp for three three days and two nights
13:47
and she there was a cost to it I think
13:51
it was a little under a couple hundred
13:52
doar it wasn't expensive but he knew
13:55
that she was struggling to save enough
13:57
to send her son to this camp and that
13:59
ultimately he really wanted to go and be
14:03
with his friends for this fifth grade
14:05
field trip camp and so he paid for the
14:09
camp he gave the employee the money and
14:12
said I want this to go towards your
14:14
son's Camp he added a little bit of
14:17
extra to it so that the son would have
14:20
money to buy you know food and snacks
14:22
and all of that and that was such a
14:26
powerful moment for this single mom that
14:28
had been working so hard and it was a
14:31
relatively small Financial investment
14:33
for the doctor I believe it was a couple
14:35
hundred and it sent a strong message to
14:40
this single mom hey I see you and I care
14:44
and I don't want your son to miss out on
14:46
something that he really wants and so
14:49
that was a really cool Act of
14:52
generosity I had another
14:55
one
14:57
that he had experienced a lot of Staff
15:01
turnover it was just back to back
15:05
somebody was moving and then he would
15:07
replace that person with somebody new
15:09
and then a different person on the team
15:12
was you know quitting to go to school
15:14
full-time and it was just mindboggling
15:18
how much transition he was experiencing
15:21
in such a short period of time and once
15:23
he had a moment to really reflect he was
15:28
very much impa Ed by what he called his
15:31
stable Force there was an employee that
15:34
was just there through all of this she
15:37
was stable yes she was tired but she
15:41
never let it show she was always showing
15:44
up to work with her best attitude
15:46
putting her best foot forward and she
15:48
was just rocking it despite the
15:52
stressful circumstances she was staying
15:54
committed to Patient Care and to her
15:58
boss who was struggling through this
16:01
Staffing issue and
16:04
so fast forward I think it was six or
16:07
seven weeks after kind of going through
16:09
a lot of major Transitions and finally
16:12
bringing some new people on he ended up
16:14
just writing her a super sweet heartfelt
16:17
note that talked about how much he
16:19
appreciated her loyalty her commitment
16:22
to show up even when she was tired and
16:25
he did put a financial gift in there it
16:28
was a pretty subst stantial gift of $500
16:31
I believe and just said like you you
16:35
deserve this and more I couldn't have
16:37
survived these last couple of months
16:38
without you you know thanks so much for
16:40
being being an amazing part of this team
16:44
so he just took the opportunity to
16:47
notice somebody who was having a
16:48
positive impact and then he thanked her
16:51
and he thanked her in a very generous
16:54
way the last example that I'll give you
16:58
is I was recently with a client who his
17:03
team is definitely on the men's they've
17:07
kind of had a history of being negative
17:11
and just struggling struggling
17:14
through the day struggling through the
17:17
schedule struggling to make the practice
17:19
profitable enough and so we had a team
17:24
meeting where we spent a lot of time
17:25
talking about the power of positivity
17:27
and he
17:29
he and the team were just so engaged and
17:31
doing such a good job of sticking with
17:33
this content and he afterwards I had
17:38
recommended a book in the team meeting
17:40
and afterwards he asked me he said
17:42
what's the name of that book again who's
17:43
the author and he was looking it up on
17:46
his phone and as we continued to chat
17:49
you know he was doing something on his
17:52
phone and then he kind of popped the
17:54
phone down and he said well I just
17:56
ordered 15 copies of that book I'm
17:58
really hoping that it is helpful to them
18:03
not only in their professional lives but
18:05
also in their personal lives so what's
18:08
cool about that story is it's a
18:09
relatively small book token I think he's
18:12
got 15 employees and these books were
18:14
probably $12 to $15 each so relatively
18:18
small investment once again and yet he
18:23
took the opportunity without even
18:25
thinking to just be generous he says hey
18:29
Bethany says this book's going to be
18:31
helpful I know my team needs help I'm
18:34
going to buy it right now and have these
18:37
books available to the team members and
18:38
again that is such a powerful Act of
18:41
generosity small it's a small Act of
18:44
generosity but it is a powerful example
18:47
of generosity so I hope you can kind of
18:50
get a flare for how generosity can look
18:54
so different and yet each of those acts
18:57
of generosity that I just talked about
18:59
are powerful they have the ability to
19:02
encourage and to inspire and to award
19:07
somebody who deserves that recognition
19:10
and so I would encourage you today it's
19:12
Thanksgiving week to think through your
19:15
team and figure out who needs an act of
19:20
generosity from me whether that's boss
19:23
to employee employee to employee manager
19:27
to employee I don't care how the
19:29
arrangement is we can all have the
19:32
opportunity to show generosity and so I
19:37
want you guys to think about that this
19:39
week what can you do to show
19:42
generosity and it can be small it can be
19:45
big but no matter what I want you to
19:48
choose these acts of generosity so that
19:51
your
19:53
appreciation for your team for your
19:55
co-workers that can be on full display
20:00
so have a great Thanksgiving week enjoy
20:03
thinking about this content I hope you
20:04
walk away from this week with lots of
20:08
ideas and opportunities to display your
20:13
generosity do you know what I am super
20:15
excited about what you were mentioning
20:19
the uh December digest oh my gosh yes
20:23
the managing Dental drama digest and um
20:27
I guess you said I wrote an article that
20:28
you liked which I don't even remember I
20:30
wrote it a you know what two weeks ago
20:32
three weeks AG I don't remember what I
20:33
babbled about but I'm glad you liked it
20:35
but I am more excited about what you
20:37
have to share like you mentioned can I
20:39
talk about this here you mentioned that
20:41
there's a lot of team building ideas
20:43
which at the end of the year we we need
20:45
all of that you mentioned um gold
20:47
setting which usually you know is my
20:50
moment but the way I think you've kind
20:52
of describe to me how you're going to
20:53
break it down and tips like I can't wait
20:55
to get started I can't believe I'm
20:57
saying that I can't can't wait to get
20:59
started on goal setting and then um can
21:02
I also mention the other you said
21:03
December's going to be a bonus there's
21:06
going to be two bonus episodes which I'm
21:09
so excited about are you charging more
21:11
for that no no way it's just December
21:14
it's the the month of giving so we're
21:16
going to give two bonus episodes
21:17
speaking of charging how like when you
21:19
look at the subscriber to get all of
21:21
this it's like less than $2 a day like I
21:24
don't how are you staying in business
21:27
giving away all of these tips
21:29
for less than two bucks a day you know
21:31
eventually it will pay off so if we're
21:33
looking at business right now man it
21:35
looks dismal but it will pay off in the
21:38
long run because again the more people
21:40
can access this the more people that
21:42
become subscribers it will make sense in
21:44
the long run you and I both knew it
21:45
wasn't going to make a lot of sense
21:46
initially but thankfully we've got a
21:48
good group of sub subscribers and it's
21:51
going to pay off in the end I'm so
21:53
excited I know me too thanks for joining
21:56
the conversation today we hope that you
21:58
are comforted in knowing that you are
22:00
not alone but we also hope that you're
22:02
walking away with some really great tips
22:05
and tricks to try in your
22:07
practice we value your feedback so
22:10

22:13
